Review - Indianapolis Concert July 12 (page 2)

Act II

With fresh batteries and a new memory card in my camera, I was ready for the real action.  The second act is sooooo much better than the first.  The guys all come out in their white suits and do "Lady is a Tramp".  Clay in white is just all kinds of yummy, and I can even hear a little of his singing now and then.  Someone posted that he doesn't blend well with the others, and this is true - but with a voice like that, how could he? *cough*solo tour*cough*  The girls were fun dancing in "Bootylicious" but I don't know the song and couldn't understand the words.  All Clay's "close encounters" with the women were far away from us.  The moments are quite short and are really just "poses", but he does look all kinds of sexxx-ay.  He's really learned how to use the power of a pose and a serious face!  But unfortunately he always seemed to be on the other side of the stage for the really fun stuff.  I did get a good picture of the Clarmen, grrrrrr.

Then Clay and Ruben did their little patter-act about liking the same girl, I couldn't hear most of it, and then they sang "The Girl is Mine".  It was nice to get home to find the video clip of this, because I can see it and hear it much better that I could at the show!  I did get some cute pictures of them before they start singing, and I could get some sense of the high vocals Clay does, but I can hear it better on the clip than I did at the concert.

Kim Locke did a very nice "Inseparable", and then they did the BeeGees medley.  Sigh, TLS was (of course) on the other side of the stage.   What I could hear of it sounded pretty good over the screaming.

Folks, don’t ever believe anyone who says Clay is “hopeless” at dancing.  I don’t remember all the moves or where they fit, but this man has grace and style and can shake his boo-tay.  He didn’t miss a lick in some fairly interesting choreography, and I think I spotted the “shoulder move”, which he executed perfectly even though he was trying to hide in the back row.  He moves like a beautiful animal.

After all the medleys Ruben did his new “Pretty Toes” song.  I fiddled with my camera and took a nap; the song (using the term loosely) is really awful.

Now don’t stone me, but I was really entertained by Carmen’s rendition of “Let’s Hear It For the Boy.”  I can totally understand why Simon wanted to make her a popstar.  She is pretty and cute, has great energy onstage, and on this night her voice was just fine, no bleating at all.  It really proves how the brutality, the pressure, and the naked exposure of AI expose every flaw in a performer instead of showing their strengths.  And it makes Clay look even more remarkable because he never had a flaw.

FINALLY I got to hear Clay sing!  CYFTLT is a quieter song, the crowd calmed down a bit, the bass was minimal, and he was on our side of the stage.  This was my favorite Clay, just standing and singing in a pure voice, although I did hate the brown-shirt-and-jeans outfit.  It was over much too soon.

Kim Locke then proceeded to blow everyone completely off the stage (even Clay) with SOTR.  Vocally that girl sooooo should have won AI.  She was the only one I could hear well all night.

Kim C had a tough job following that act, but I enjoyed her “motorcycle” number.  She really is quite impressive onstage, she has a feline, Amazon quality about her.

Ricky sang beautifully in his duet with Julia, who was less impressive.  She has on this unfortunate black cut-out dress, and there is this….THING…showing in the cutout, we couldn’t figure out what it was.  A roll of fat? An extra rib? A hot dog for later?  I should have pulled out my binoculars.  It was so distracting we kept missing parts of the song.

There were some more songs and then Clay returns to sing with the group in “I’ve Had the Time of My Life”.  This is really an anthem to the Idols’ experience and I found it quite moving, they are all singing about how they owe it to the fans that they are up on that stage.  At the end of the song, they all wave goodbye and leave, the stage goes dark, and it looks like the show is over.  But we know it’s not.
