Heirs to
the great Russian pairs tradition, Elena and Anton have had more than their
share of Russian angst. Before skating with Anton, Elena suffered a
grievous head injury while practicing with her former partner and nearly gave up
the sport. World champions for three years in a row, last year they were
stripped of their 2000 world championship because Elena had taken a cold
medication and failed a drug test. Their Charlie Chaplin
free program was probably the most original and interesting at Worlds, and they
performed it well but not spectacularly. Even when
they are not at their best, the sheer physical beauty and grace of this lovely pair is
a visual feast.
